Frito’s Chili Pie

October 1st will mark the 80th anniversary of the Frito, the world’s best corn chip. To celebrate this milestone, Frito has decided to celebrate in a big way. The company plans to break a Guinness World Record and create the largest ever Fritos Chili Pie.

Fritos Chili Pie is a mixture of fritos, Hormel chili, and shredded cheddar cheese. The company even has its own recipe for you to make the best chili pie at home (see recipe below).

The company will attempt to become the title holder of the world’s largest ever Frito Pie on October 1st, 2012 at the largest fair in the United States — The State Fair of Texas. The attempt will begin at 10 am and will be located at the feet of Big Tex, the fair’s giant statue and mascot. If the attempt is successful, fairgoers will be offered a taste of the winning snack, along with a variety of Pepsi products.

Coincidentally, October 1st is also Fair Day for many schools in the Dallas area so make sure you take your kids to enjoy rides, games, and a chance for them to experience history in the making.

Frito-Lay will also be offering discounted coupons at local retailers for you to make your own frito pie at home. These will be $1 off coupons when you purchase Fritos and Hormel chili. For every coupon used, Frito-Lay will donate $1 to the WWP, or Wounded Warrior Project. They will donate up to $100,000 to this project, which serves to honor and empower wounded soldiers in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Recipe: Fritos Chili Pie

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Serves: 4

Passed down from generation to generation, an instant classic!

Ingredients

1 large bag of FRITOS® Corn Chips

1 15 oz. can of chili with beef (with or without beans)

1 8 oz. bag of shredded cheese

Optional: chopped onion, tomatoes, lettuce, jalapenos and/or sour cream

Instructions

In an oven-safe serving dish, pour in FRITOS® Corn Chips and spread evenly. Heat chili and pour evenly over corn chips. Add additional ingredients like onion, tomato, lettuce, and jalapeno as desired. Sprinkle cheese all over and pop into the oven at 350 degrees till the cheese is a little melted. Serve immediately with a spoon.

Other variations: There are many variations of the FRITOS CHILI PIE®. For instance, the Walking Taco uses the same ingredients as the FRITOS CHILI PIE®. However, as a fun and easy snack (usually served at fairs or sports events), the ingredients are mixed together in the bag of FRITOS® Corn Chips instead of a dish. Don’t forget the spoon!
